Week One: Opening Up the Gospel for Advent – Matthew
If you were trying to grab your reader’s attention (and don’t all authors want to do this?) I could hardly think of a worse way to start a gospel…with a list of names. Why does Matthew do this? We must assume he knows what he’s doing, and that this effort is superintended and authorized by the Holy Spirit. So this week, by Matthew’s odd beginning, we try to understand what message this entire gospel has for us. The message is included in this strange start.
