God institutes a covenant with Abraham (Genesis 12 and Genesis 15). This week I spend time to explain what a covenant is; an agreement between two parties. God makes promises through this covenant. God promises land, many descendants and, through this budding people, one who will be a blessing to all people. It is the beginning of a faith walk. It is the beginning of the shaping of the people of God. The concrete plan of salvation though out the Bible is laid down here in this story. The story of Isaac is one that demonstrated Abraham’s growing and solid faith. It is also a foreshadowing of Jesus sacrifice.
